Chapter 15

While Renee wanted to get on the road before noon on Saturday, the girls staying at the inn decided to make the party bus wait an extra hour before they were ready. They piled out of their rooms in skyscraper heels and wedges with dresses hugging all of their curves. As opposed to the relaxing day before at the beach, these girls were done up to impress. Even Cait had taken a little extra time that morning getting ready, while Renee had spent most of it on her laptop finishing two days’ worth of client work before responding to emails.

When Renee came home on Sunday, she’d be able to recover from whatever shenanigans the girls decided to come up with at the casino.

Admittedly, she looked forward to a night out. The last one she had was with Sadie and Luc, and before that—she couldn’t remember. It was a nice escape from her life, and she had no idea when it would happen with Cait again.

While Renee waited inside the air-conditioned bus, with the driver who was enamored by his phone, she thought of Luc and the day before at the beach. The girls had stayed at the house for dinner and well after, but Renee hadn’t seen Luc other than his shadow moving around the house when she had returned from bringing the girls back to the inn.

That morning, his truck was gone by the time she had woken up. From the bus, she sat on the side facing the road, looking for him. There was no way he’d know she was inside, but at least knowing that he was headed home or getting a glimpse of him would have eased her mind a little.

Everything had changed at the beach. The way he had treated Cait and her friends and his gentle touch against her skin threw her back in time to when it was just her and Luc together as teens. Their legs tangled up together in the sand as they read books together or sunbathed.

The bus rocked, propelling Renee from her thoughts. The girls whooped and cheered as they strode down the aisle, taking their seats. There was enough room for at least twenty people, but the girls paired up with each other.

Blair glanced at Renee, and she indicated where the supplies were. Renee pointed at the overhead storage and Blair nodded at her. Her serious expression didn’t waver as she took her seat next to Cait.

The bus roared to life and turned onto the main road. Renee’s gut twisted as the moment finally came for her to leave West Cove for the night, something she hadn’t done in a while. Partly, she worried for Marcus, but mostly she wasn’t sure she’d be able to get Luc out of her mind.

The half-hour trip to the casino offered a reprieve from Renee’s thoughts as she acted like a server, getting drinks and snacks for all the girls. As much as they had complained about their weight and dieting
